"Sichuan Cuisine,Global Taste" Enters Africa for the First Time

On April 16th, a series of activities with the theme of "Sichuan Cuisine, Global Taste" were held in Harare, first of its kind in Africa. They were hosted by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe and Sichuan Provincial People's Government. Sichuan Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and Sichuan Overseas Exchange Association organized those events.

In the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, the Sichuan delegation, with the theme of "Food in China, Taste in Sichuan", set up booths showing Sichuan cuisine including "Panda Bamboo", "Kung Pao Chicken", "Ma Po Tofu" and "Boiling Water". These activities demonstrated Panda culture and Sichuan folk culture.

More than 200 Chinese and Zimbabwean guests tasted the most authentic Sichuan cuisine including 3 cold dishes, 6 hot dishes and 3 snacks such as "Kung Pao Chicken", "Powder Steamed Beef", "Dry-Braised Prawn" and "Sichuan Cold Noodle". Sichuan cuisine, one of China's four major cuisines, shined and enjoyed great spotlight in Zimbabwe.

Performances featuring Sichuan culture including Sichuan opera face-changing, "China-Zimbabwe Friendship" (large puppet show), female acrobatics and female solo "jasmine flower" attracted the guests to cheer.

In his remarks, Wen Su, Director of Sichuan Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, said that these activities shows the friendly relations between the two peoples. "Tonight, we bring a feast of Chinese culture and art to friends from all walks of life in Zimbabwe through Sichuan cuisine and wonderful performances, helping more Zimbabwean friends to understand the unique culture of Sichuan,". An open Sichuan warmly welcomes Zimbabwean friends from all walks of life to "taste, cooperate and seek win-win outcomes.

Ambassador Guo said that Sichuan Province, hometown of pandas, is located in China's inland with beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural resources, just like Zimbabwe. It is hoped that the guests, through the the "Bite of Sichuan", could enjoy a better understanding of this beautiful province. These events will be the beginning to stronger exchanges and cooperation in tourism, investment and other fields between China and Zimbabwe.

Mutsvangwa, Zimbabwean Minister of Media, Information and Publicity recalled her life in China for four years and her two visits to Chengdu. Food is one of the most important ties connecting the two peoples. Tasting Sichuan food again, she hoped these activities can advance China-Zimbabwean relations to a higher level.

Apart from "Sichuan Cuisine, Global Taste", the delegation also organized a free medical consultation activity. Four senior Chinese medicine practitioners popularized medical and health knowledge for more than 100 overseas Chinese and local people and conducted preliminary screening, diagnosis and general treatment services. The delegation also held training activities on cooking skills of Sichuan cuisine.
