Officially Launched

On May 7th, the third phase of China's "Maternal and Children's Health" project for Zimbabwe was officially launched in Harare. More than 150 people including Chinese ambassador Guo Shaochun and Madame Wang Wei, First Lady of Zimbabwe Auxillia Mnangagwa, Minister of Health and Child Moyo, Economic and Commercial Counselor Chen Ning of the Chinese embassy, were present at the ceremony.

Ambassador Guo stated that China and Zimbabwe enjoy a time-honored friendship. The two peoples have stood side by side through thick and thin and carried out sound cooperation in various fields. The Chinese government has helped build hospitals, donated three batches of medical equipment worth more than 2 million US dollars, and sent 150 medical experts to Zimbabwe, sparing no effort to help Zimbabwe improve medical services and people's health.

Ambassador Guo stressed that disease prevention is one of the major measures to implement the 100 maternal and children's health projects pledged by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the UN Summit in 2015. It is also an important action to implement the outcomes of the FOCAC Johannesburg Summit and Beijing Summit. By sending experts to Zimbabwe for diagnosis and treatment of cervical diseases, donating medical equipment and training medical personnel, China has helped Zimbabwe improve its ability to prevent and treat cervical diseases at an early stage. This partnership has and will continue to improve women's health and public health in Zimbabwe.

In her speech, First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa highly praised China's help to Zimbabwe in the field of cervical disease control. Zimbabwe has one of the highest rates of cervical diseases in Africa, and its high incidence and mortality rate have seriously affected women's health, family life and national development. Lack of medical resources makes it difficult to fight cervical diseases. As the ambassador for health and children's care in Zimbabwe, she is willing to introduce advanced medical technologies and equipment to Zimbabwe, jointly promote the development of Zimbabwe's public health endeavors and free Zimbabwean women from cervical diseases.

Deputy Director Liang Songyue pointed out that since the implementation of the project three years ago, the two sides have worked closely and made every effort to help Zimbabwe improve the reproductive health of women through equipment donation, short-term free medical consultation, academic exchanges and clinical teaching.

Moyo thanked China for its long-term help. China's free cervical disease diagnosis and medical equipment donation in Zimbabwe has helped the screening, early diagnosis and treatment of diseases in Zimbabwe, benefiting a large number of women and marking a milestone in the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer in Zimbabwe.

Later, Ambassador Guo and Minister Moyo signed the agreement of China's future donation of medical equipment to Zimbabwe. Before the ceremony, Ambassador Guo and Madame Wang Wei inspected the medical equipment site along with the First Lady and Minister Moyo.

Xinhua News Agency, China Radio International, the Herald and other media from the two countries covered the ceremony.
