Zimbabwean Minister of Health confident in China-Zimbabwe friendship despite COVID-19

On February 6, Mr. Zhao Baogang, Charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, held talks with the Honourable Obadiah Moyo, Zimbabwe's Minister of Health and Child Care, on strengthening bilateral cooperation to cope with the new coronavirus. After the talks, they jointly met the press. Mr. Zou Xiaoming, the economic and commercial affairs counselor of the Chinese Embassy joined the discussion.

Mr. Zhao gave a comprehensive briefing on the latest situation of the epidemic and China’s effective response. He stressed that under the strong leadership of President Xi and the Communist Party of China, China has the confidence and ability to win the fight at an early date. China fully understands Zimbabwe’s concern for its citizens, especially students in China. So far they are safe and sound. China will continue to make its best efforts protect their health and safety.

Mr. Zhao stressed that the Chinese Embassy attaches great importance to epidemic prevention in Zimbabwe. The Embassy has set up an emergency response mechanism with the Chinese community in Zimbabwe; it has called for the cancellation of non-essential trips from China to Zimbabwe; it will continue to strengthen cooperation with Zimbabwe in screening, quarantine, diagnosis and treatment of the disease to prevent infection and at the same time ensure normal people-to-people exchange.

Minister Moyo appreciated the timely sharing of information and expressed Zimbabwe’s deep sympathy to the Chinese people who are bravely fighting the new coronavirus. He commended the active and constructive approach of the Chinese government in engaging in international cooperation, which shows the Chinese government is highly responsible not only for their own people, but also for the people in Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwean nationals in China.

Minister Moyo said Zimbabwe is convinced China is fully capable of bringing the situation under control at an early date. Zimbabwe’s friendship with China goes back a long time and sets a brilliant example for Africa’s relations with China. Zimbabwe will not stop normal exchange between the people. Zimbabwe knows full well panic can be as damaging as virus and will not allow the friendship between the two nations to be blocked by the virus. Zimbabwe stands ready to work closely with China on the prevention of the disease.

In the joint press conference, Mr. Zhao and Minister Moyo answered questions concerning the situation of the Zimbabweans in China and Zimbabwe’s preparedness. It was broadcast later in the same day by ZBC a feature article was published on its website.
